Q:

My husband does not necessarily fit the descriptions that I find here for any of your mood disorders, but he goes through cyclical mood changes almost predictably.
He will be fine one day and then he "goes away" for 2 weeks to a month. We have some marital issues, but nothing out of the ordinary for a couple married for 13 years and nothing that can't be easily addressed. This is what seems to trigger these down times. I would like to know if this is an avenue that we should pursue. It seems like he is unhappy 50% of his life, even though we have a wonderful family, friends and a very active faith life. A few more facts: he has always been very driven but unable to follow through on much. Especially things that he says. and has battled insomnia as long as I have known him.

Thank you for your time - Shannon

A:

Dear Shannon,
Has your husband been to see your family physician or a psychiatrist to determine whether he is bipolar or not? It would be useful to have a diagnose so that he can be treated accordingly.

Regarding your marital difficulties, it would be useful to see a marriage/family therapist to address some of the issues that exist between the two of you, particularly if you suspect that this contributes to his mood change.
