Hi Dr. Gorman,
My nephew has a severe case of ODD. He was recently seen by a psychiatrist who recommended residential treatment and said he was lacking a Super Ego. I know what the Super Ego does and I am wondering how can they treat him so that he will develop one if that is at all possible.
Thank you very much for your time.

This is avery interesting question. I wonder if the super-ego comment isn't in some context to help me understand it better?
Anyway, OCD is an awful disorder that causes patients great pain. To hear that residential treatment is bieing recommended makes sense as a start on the road to recovery. As far as the super-ego is concerned, trying to help someone develop a conscience is a worthy and worthwhile pursuit. I would not be negative about the potential for success, if the psychiatrist is aware and committed to the goal (as the psychiatrist describes). It is reasonable to be skeptical, but try your best to be cautiously optimistic. Good luck, and thanks for the question.
Dr. Gorman.
